La Sociedad Honoraria HispánicaCapítulo: Los Escuderos de Don QuixoteAsesor: Sr. Leo TeixeiraLa Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica (Spanish Honor Society) is a society that honors outstanding achievement in the Spanish language. In order to be eligible for membership, students must have maintained an honor average in the study of Spanish or Portuguese for at least two years of intermediate study. (Level 1 is not an intermediate level). Character, leadership, seriousness of purpose, cooperation, honesty, service and commitment to others are also part of the criteria for selection into the Society. The student must be enrolled full-time in the study of the language at the time of initiation. An honor average at Hackettstown High School is considered a final average of 93% or higher in CP Spanish/Portuguese 2 & 3 (or a weighted A - 88% or above - in level 3 Honors) to be admitted, in addition to a teacher recommendation. (Students are inducted in the fall after successful completion of level 3 or 4, as long as they are enrolled full-time (through H.H.S.) in an approved Spanish course.)
In this organization we fundraise for our chapter, take trips to broaden our understanding of Spanish and Latin American cultures, and participate in service projects and fundraising to benefit the community. In addition, we provide peer tutoring opportunities for lower level H.H.S. Spanish students.
This year, we are focusing on:
1) Toy Drive to benefit local families of DYFS and the Easton Children's Home
2) Annual Uruguayan (new) clothing drive to benefit the Fundación Camino Maldonado
3) Peer Tutoring at lunch in both lunches 1 and 2
4) Halloween activities5) Fundraising at Day of the Dead
6) Publishing our book of poems and essays created by students7) Visiting a local Hispanic business in HackettstownWe are also hoping to plan our annual field trip soon, which will be determined as opportunities become increasingly more available.
